What is CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy)?
CBT is a short-term, solution focused therapeutic approach that has been proven to be highly effective for a number of symptoms and problems. It is based on the idea that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected, and symptoms arise from problematic patterns among them. CBT differs from psychotherapy "(talk therapy) in that it focuses on how to manage challenging symptoms rather than focusing on why they are happening. CBT provides education and active coping strategies so that each individual can learn how best to help themselves.
The website of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America is one resource where you can learn more about CBT.
What is ERP (Exposure and Response/Ritual Prevention?
ERP is a key and powerful learning component of evidence based treatment for OCD and anxiety symptoms. It consists of gradual exposure to various situations and/or thoughts feared or avoided due to anxiety, paired with the mastery of more adaptive responses. Exposure exercises are developed and engaged in collaboratively with your therapist, never “forced” upon someone. While many patients express apprehension when starting ERP, most people experience expedient and meaningful relief when treatment is done under the guidance of a skilled and appropriately trained therapist. What if my loved one refuses treatment?
It is not uncommon for individuals with anxiety to exhibit signfificant reluctance or apprehension towards treatment. A consultation appointment can be scheduled by parents/spouse/other family members in order to assess the general needs of a particular situation, provide education and support, and discuss direction and resources to consider.
