CBT is not only a lasting treatment approach that has been proven effective by science, it is also one that builds important strengths of confidence, balance, and flexibility. Some of the specific interventions I provide under the larger CBT umbrella are Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Habit Reversal Training (HRT), Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I also integrate mindfulness techniques where indicated. All of these are compatible with medication therapies whenever those are indicated, and I believe it’s important to work closely with a patient’s medical provider to ensure comprehensive care.
My expertise includes treating: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxiety, and related conditions including: Social Anxiety, Maternal Anxiety, Pre and Postpartum anxiety/depression, Pregnancy and Postpartum Obsessive Compulsive Symptoms, Generalized Anxiety, Panic Disorder, Separation Anxiety, Tourette’s Syndrome, Trichotillomania, Selective Mutism, Body-focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRB), Hoarding concerns, Health Anxiety, Body Dsymorphic Disorder (BDD), and Specific Phobias.
What exactly is CBT?!
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy, but much different than what comes to mind for many people— you won’t lie on a couch and go into details of your childhood, or discuss how you feel about your problems for years of ongoing sessions. The basic principle of CBT lies in the concept that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors impact one another, and that these elements can shaped into more proactive and helpful ways of behaving and thinking.
CBT has strong and established research support across a number of physical and mental health conditions, including as a first-line treatment for the anxiety and obsessive compulsive spectrum disorders. It is a shorter-term, solution-focused approach that is collaborative and action oriented. It works towards treatment goals we will establish together for reducing interfering symptoms, maintaining lasting outcomes, and building a life that matches your values.
What is an LMFT?
A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist is someone who has been specifically trained to treat individuals, couples and families. Marriage and Family Therapy is based on General Systems Theory, which is the idea that change in any one part of a system changes the system as a whole. This approach helps us thoughtfully consider the broad influences in a persons life, and address the components needed.
CBT From an LMFT Perspective
I believe I am able to bring a unique perspective and skill set to addressing treatment needs as a marriage and family therapist with strong expertise in specialty CBT. This dual emphasis of my training background ensures you will be receiving the most up to date and targeted interventions shown effective for your symptoms, while never losing sight of your broader needs, interests, and relationship goals. There is a reason the saying is “no man is an island.” Our work together will never view you as “your condition” or through your limitations, but instead concentrate on building improved health, resiliency and joy.
